If you’re a parent of a young child, you might have noticed that you’re slouching more than you used to. That’s because you spend most of your days:
- Pushing the pram
- Changing diapers
- Picking a moving human being multiple times a day
- And when they are very small:
- Rocking the baby
- Feeding the baby
No wonder your posture isn’t all that great great! All the actions listed above have to do with forward movement, which is the opposite of what we need for good posture.
Why is that a problem?
Because bad posture can lead to back pain, neck tension, headaches, shallow breathing (which in its turn causes stress), less energy, compromised digestion and even less confidence! Ask any mum during the first months or years of their kid’s life. I guarantee you most of them will be suffering from one of these things.
What you can do
- Visualise a string at the top of your head, keeping it nice and tall with your chin tucked in just a little bit
- Visualise a straight line going down from your ears to your shoulders, your hips and your ankles
- Do some stretches, mainly for the upper body but the lower body is just as important (yoga is amazing but you don’t have to do that if you don’t want to)
- Set reminders during the day so that you think about your posture at specific moments. Going through a door is a typical one that many people like to use.
Such a simple thing to change, and it can make a huge difference!
